Some Water Smart Landscaping Tips:

 

 

1.  Reduce Soil Compaction: 

Aeration (core-plug aerator / deep-ripper)

Add Organic Matter (well-aged leaf compost)

2.  Raise Mow Height to 3” :  promotes deeper root growth, reduces moisture loss

Use the best lawn-mix for your conditions (for your soils, sunlight amount and existing moisture conditions). 

Consider fine-fescue lawn mix – is it appropriate for some of your lawn?

3. Practice Smarter-Watering: When needed, targeted, reducing chances for excessive evaporation

Timing:  no watering between 10am – 6pm & in strong winds

Utilize Low-volume drip irrigation / targeted irrigation

Smart-Timers / Controllers

Measure Your Water Use (keep track of your water-meter)

4.  Harvest Your Rooftop Rainwater:  Temporary Storage for using rainwater for irrigation

Rainbarrels:  55-90 gallons

Cisterns & Pumps:  500 - 3,000 gallons

5.  Low-Water-Use Landscaping:

Selecting ‘Right Plant for the Right Place’

- All plants like a specific moisture zone, as well as specific soil & light conditions
